[LUNATION] - New Moon in Virgo
Mercury Revokes its Trine from Mars
Starting off the month, we are emerging from a New Moon in Virgo in a very tight square to Mars. New Moons are typically a time of rest and retreat, as the Moon looses all of her light and then becomes consumed by the beams of the Sun, becoming purged and reborn. With Mars in the overcoming position, it really highlights major obstacles, fights, and challenges that will need to be fought over the coming months. Mars and the Conjunction of the Luminaries are both in signs ruled by Mercury, so the conflict will be about words, communications, news, and details. For this lunation, Mercury’s ingress into Libra becomes emphasized and the trine it makes to Mars. Mercury in Libra's signs show the topics of relationships, community, justice, and law are all emphasized, and Mercury is the domicile lord of Mars, trying to work together and keep the balance and peace, since Mercury is in Libra, but this is somewhat contradictory to what Mars wants to do, which is create urgency, challenge power, and bring contests with Gemini topics, such as speaking, writing, with scholars, education, etc. but Mercury is in a position where it is in the sign Mars is exiled sign, Libra, so the qualities of what Mars wants to do are not supported by its domicile lord, even though they are in positive aspect. There is a lot of passive aggressive energy in the beginning of the month as there is this trine forming between these planets, who are trying to harmonize. Mercury is said to be benefic when with the benefic planets, and malefic with the malefic planets. Mercury is technically malefic in this case since it is connecting with Mars. Mercury as a messenger is supposed to deliver news to Mars, who is has responsibility for because Mars is in its home (domicile), and because Mercury starts slowing down towards the second week of the month, Mercury will be “too slow” for Mars, and station Retrograde on September 10th. It’s at this point in the month that we start to see Mercury Revoking its aspect to Mars.
Revoking: When Planet A is making an application to Planet B, but before the aspect perfect in the number of degrees, arc minutes, and arc seconds, Planet A stations Retrograde and the aspect that was forming fizzles out and delays are introduced that prevent the situation from moving forward. The Islamic Astrologers understood this as نكث. As a verb, it has connotations of breaking a promise, violating an obligation, and disloyalty to an agreement. When you take an oath to some or make a promise and you don’t fulfill what was expected: this is the type of scenario that is being depicted. As a result, there is some sort of withdrawal or retreat happening, like someone is cancelling or repealing a decision they made previously.. There is also an element of disloyalty and betrayal to this situation. As a noun, it has connotations of things untwisting or unravelling, like the knots that tie people together, being unravelled and disconnected and severed.
The main emphasis of this type of circumstance between the planets is that there is a change of heart, and Mercury is having a change of heart this time. It’s interesting to think about Mercury and Mars's relationship over the past year, because they made their 3 conjunctions in August, September, and October of 2021, and its almost like Mercury is going back on their word to help Mars in their malice and create harm. We saw these conjunctions in Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio last year, and Mercury is revoking its aspect to Mars in while in Libra. It’s interesting because Mars and Mercury will have a similar experience again in August/September of 2023 where Mercury and Mars will be in Virgo and Mercury revokes it’s aspects. It’s almost like whatever agreements Mercury made in 2021 it will be in the process of undoing not only during this Retrograde but also in 2023. In this current instance, Mercury in Libra is ruled by Venus in Leo, who is in an exact opposition to Saturn, which definitely means that the reason why there’s a setback with Mars is because there’s a delay or restriction Venus is going through and Venus governs Mercury in Libra. So Saturn is pulling the strings yet again.
